[MUSIC PLAYING] [Title screen:] The Steps of the Engineering Design Process [00:00:13 --> 00:00:16] [Description: Young teenaged boy sitting at the kitchen table. He has a notebook, paper towel roll, aluminum foil, and a large plastic bug on the table. His mother walks into the room and sits down at the table.] [Mom:] Wow, what are you working on? [00:00:16 --> 00:00:27] [Boy:] I'm engineering. I learned engineers solve all kinds of problems. I have a problem the big bug that I need to move outside, so I'm designing something to catch the bug safely. [00:00:27 --> 00:00:29] [Mom:] Cool. Can I engineer with you? [00:00:29 --> 00:00:35] Yeah, we’ll need to use the engineering design process. The steps engineers use to solve problems. [00:00:35 --> 00:00:37] [Description:] Boy points to art of the engineering design process, a cycle with five steps: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve. [00:00:37 --> 00:00:41] [Description:] Mom turns to the camera and points to the viewer. [Mom:] Oh, and you're here too. Why don't you try with us? [00:00:41 --> 00:00:47] [Boy:] We're starting with the ask step. First, we need to ask questions to find out more about the problem. [00:00:47 --> 00:00:54] [Mom:] In the ask step, engineers ask questions like, what is the problem and how are we going to test our idea? [00:00:54 --> 00:00:56] [Boy:] Or what kinds of bugs are there? [00:00:56 --> 00:01:08] [Mom, facing camera:] Exactly. We are designing a bug catcher, so we are asking questions about bugs. If you are solving a different problem, you will have some different questions. [00:01:08 --> 00:01:10] [Boy, facing camera:] Yeah, what are you going to ask? [00:01:10 --> 00:01:19 [Mom, facing camera:] You can pause the video while you ask questions and decide how you are going to test your solution We'll be right here, when you get back. [00:01:19 --> 00:01:38 [MUSIC PLAYING] [On screen text:] Pause now to ask What's the problem? What have others done? How will you test your solution? [00:01:38 --> 00:01:40] [Description:] [Mom reenters the room carrying markers and an empty paper towel roll.] [Boy:] OK, what's next? [00:01:40 --> 00:01:42] [Mom:] Next is the imagine step. [00:01:42 --> 00:01:45] [Boy:] Oh, I'm great imagining. Want to see me get creative? [00:01:45 --> 00:01:46] [Mom:] OK. [00:01:46 --> 00:01:49] [MUSIC PLAYING] [Description:] Mom and boy close their eyes. A thought bubble appears above the boy's head. In it, there are an empty tissue box, the lid to a shoe box, and empty paper towel roll, a ruler, a wooden dowel, a glass jar with a top with small holes, and a plastic cup [00:01:51 --> 00:01:55] [Boy:] Did you see that? I came up with a totally new idea we could use to solve our problem. [00:01:55 --> 00:01:59] [Mom:] Wow, I can't wait to see what else you come up with. [00:01:59 --> 00:02:13] [Mom, facing camera:] Ready to brainstorm? You can ask yourself what are some solutions to the problem. In this step, we also look for different materials to use for our solution. We'll use things like this yogurt container. [00:02:13 --> 00:02:16] [Boy:] Or this string from our junk drawer. [00:02:16 --> 00:02:24] [Mom, continuing to face the camera:] Press pause while you imagine a few different designs, then go find materials you can use. We won't start without you. [00:02:24 --> 00:02:40] [MUSIC PLAYING] [On screen text:] Pause now to Imagine What could be some solutions? Brainstorm ideas. Choose the best one. [00:02:40 --> 00:02:46] [Boy:] OK, next, we need to make a plan for our design. Do you think we can draw what we're planning to make? [00:02:46 --> 00:02:47] [Mom:] Absolutely. [00:02:47 --> 00:02:56] [Mom, turning to face the camera:] We draw, write, gather, and list our materials. We also talk to each other as we come up with our plan. [00:02:56 --> 00:03:00] [Boy:] What's this called? I want to label it in my drawing. [Mom SHRUGS SHOULDERS] [00:03:00 --> 00:03:05] [Mom, facing camera] Now, you try. Pause now so you can make your plan. [00:03:05 --> 00:03:18] [MUSIC PLAYING] [On screen text:] Pause now to plan. Draw a diagram. Make a list of materials you'll need. [00:03:18 --> 00:03:20] [Boy:] Now, we build. [00:03:20 --> 00:03:22] [Mom:] We made it to the create step. [00:03:22 --> 00:03:24] [Boy:] I wonder if our design will work. [00:03:24 --> 00:03:28] [Mom:] Well, we'll just see what happens when we follow the plan. [00:03:28 --> 00:03:32] [Mom, turning to face the camera:] Pause now to give yourself time to create your design. [00:03:32 --> 00:03:47] [MUSIC PLAYING] [On screen text] Pause now to create. Follow your plan and create it. Test it out! Did your design solve the problem? What is and isn't working? [00:03:47 --> 00:03:50] [Boy:] Oh, that didn't work too well. [00:03:50 --> 00:03:57] [Mom:] Well, we almost had it, but then the whole thing fell apart. [00:03:57 --> 00:03:59] [Boy:] So now, we improve. [00:03:59 --> 00:04:00] [Mom:] Right on. [00:04:00 --> 00:04:11] [Mom, turning to face the camera:] It's time to figure out what worked well, what didn't, and come up with a new solution. Pause now to think about how you can make your design better. [00:04:11 --> 00:04:24] [MUSIC PLAYING] [On screen text] Pause now to Improve Make your design even better. Test it out! Try again! [00:04:24 --> 00:04:27] [Mom:] We are really starting to think like engineers. [00:04:27 --> 00:04:28] [Mom and boy CLAP their hands together in a high-five] [00:04:28 --> 00:04:35] [Boy:] Now, I get why the engineering design process is a circle. We're going back to the beginning. [00:04:35 --> 00:04:51] [Mom, turning to face the camera:] We are going to start asking questions, imagining, planning, and creating all over again to make a better design. We hope you had fun using the engineering design process with us. Let's solve more problems together soon. 00:04:51 --> 00:05:07] [MUSIC PLAYING] [On screen text] Made possible through the generous support of Overdeck Family Foundation EiE Engineering is Elementary Museum of Science
